Reducing harmful addiction across Cumbria
Stop the Start
vaping support for young people

Stop the Start is a new project that aims to educate young people about vaping, and support those who already smoke or vape.

We're offering workshops and intervention sessions to young people aged 11-17 and living in Cumberland.
There are two key parts to it:
workshops and intervention.

Please note, there is no charge to you for either of these services thanks to funding from Cumberland Council.
Workshops
We’ll be running workshops in schools and youth groups to raise awareness about the risks of smoking and vaping.

-
Classroom workshops lasting 1 hr
-
For groups of up to 30 young people
-
Education and awareness on: nicotine addiction, risks of vaping/smoking, illicit vapes, how to get support and more
-
Some availability for assemblies/youth groups/talks/stands at events
Intervention
For any young person aged 11–17 who wants help to quit smoking, vaping, or both, we’ll offer friendly, tailored support through one-to-one or small group sessions.

-
Option of 1:1 or small group support (e.g. if a few friends want to come together)
-
Support to quit, or 'pre-quit support' (if the young person isn't sure but is interested in stopping/reducing)
-
Weekly support for up to 8 weeks
-
One-off drop-in sessions also available
-
Usually at education setting/CADAS offices
-
Nicotine patches available for young people aged 12+ (if suitable)

"It was great to have someone who knew so much about vaping and could give them the facts and the info. I find they listen better often to someone different.”
"The practitioner did a really good job of being on their level, leading it enough but letting the students share what they wanted to."
"I thought the vaping workshop was excellent. It was well pitched and very interesting, providing more information on vaping than I've heard before."
