The 'Stop the Start' project addresses the issue of young people smoking and vaping in Cumberland. It will help to prevent young people from starting smoking and vaping, and it will also support young people to quit smoking and vaping.

 

There are two parts to the project - education (workshops) and intervention (1:1 sessions).

 

Education: Educational workshops will be delivered in schools and youth group settings. They will educate young people on the risks and harms of smoking and vaping, and help them to understand nicotine dependence. Workshops will last approximately 1 hour and are suitable for group sizes of up to 30 young people, aged 11-17 years.

 

Intervention: Intervention sessions will provide personalised 1:1 support for any young person aged 11-17 years that wants to quit smoking, vaping, or both. In addition, smokers and vapers aged 12+ can be issued with licensed Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) if appropriate. Young people can express their interest in 1:1 support sessions following an educational workshop, or they can be referred separately.

 

The project will be delivered in Cumberland from September 2025 - July 2026.

We aim to reach 1000 young people across at least 20 settings.
